This online Māori business qualification helps you strengthen relationships with Māori organisations, clients, and communities — empowering you to apply cultural awareness and leadership in authentic, meaningful ways across Aotearoa.

Course Delivery

All studies are completed online in your own environment through the Canvas eLearning platform, with regular virtual tutor support. You’ll need a computer and internet access. All learning materials are provided through the platform, and while you’re welcome to do extra research using textbooks or online sources, no textbook purchases are required.

Further Information

All studies are completed online in your own environment. Studies are conducted using the Canvas eLearning platform along with regular virtual tutor support. Students require a computer and internet access. All of the necessary materials required to successfully complete assessments will be available through the learning platform.

Students must be 16 years of age and residing in New Zealand for the duration of their studies. This programme is only available to New Zealand & Australian Citizens and Residents.

Students will be required to have NCEA Level 2 or the equivalent, this includes a minimum of 10 numeracy and 10 literacy credits at Level one or higher on the Directory of Assessment Standards; and 60 credits at Level two or above with at least 12 credits in each of three subjects including a minimum of 8 credits at Level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Māori;

Provisional Entry

Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme will be eligible to be enrolled as a student where their previous educational, work or life experience indicates they have a reasonable likelihood of success.

Students who have not attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the required minimum entry requirements for a programme may also be eligible to enrol in exceptional circumstances. Such decisions will be made by the School of Business Manager.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Interpret the role of Te Reo in Māori businesses in New Zealand
  • Apply Māori greetings, orders and phrases in a Māori business environment
  • Read Te Reo signage within a Māori business environment
  • Apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in relation to Māori business
  • Apply tikanga Māori appropriate to a Māori business workplace
  • Apply ethics and bicultural concepts appropriate for a Māori business environment
  • Interpret the concepts of whanaungatanga (relationship building), nga korerotanga (communication skills) with kaimahi, whanau, hapū and iwi (internal and external stakeholders)
  • Coordinate the roles and behaviours within a team to achieve effective business operations in a Māori business environment
  • Coordinate whanaungatanga and manaakitanga within a team to achieve effective business operations in a Māori business environment
  • Analyse the concepts of sustainability for a Māori business
  • Use management tools and techniques to support sustainability within a Māori business environment
  • Reflect on the management tool and techniques to develop growth within a sustainable Māori business

Employment Pathway

Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to be employed in a variety of support roles in Māori businesses. Graduates will also be able to contribute to community groups in volunteer project roles.

Where transfer of credit for previous study is being applied for, the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Form must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the Intake start date.
